It is time for a new social media experience and I have an idea. Yes, I’ve talked about the AI custom content before, but I’m talking about something else. Something more structurally different.
I find myself flipping between X, Snapchat and Instagram/Facebook (I’ve removed TikTok). I tend to go to X for more brain stimulation (have you ever thought of X, Y, or Z) as well as communicative socialization. Snapchat I use for for personal updates and quick stories. Instagram is more for entertainment (NFL content, comedy show clips, etc.) with the occasional update on friends/family. I also use Instagram for more business relationship and communication. I need different things at different times. As I am looking for interesting ideas, I don’t appreciate being distracted by the latest trade in the sports world. Yes, I engage, but then I lose track of what I was looking for.
The algorithms are great and do tend to generally know what I am looking for. They do not know WHEN I want each thing though.
New Social Media Experience
This concept exists in an underdeveloped fashion, but hear me out. A single social media platform may become dominant if it develops mystiques and personas.
Imagine you are on your favorite social media app. You want to make sure you didn’t miss anything with your friends or earth-shattering sports news. Instead of scrolling or searching for each thing, the top of your page has custom personas for you to select with a specific algorithm on each.
Now I can quickly scroll my friends/family feed, switch over to sports, then feel comfortable that I can relax and transition to my stand up comedy feed for a bit.
Content you see that should be included in a given persona and be flagged to help the algorithm know what you like in each. Even developing and personalizing these personas can develop great value for the social platforms.
Custom AI models were all the rage, how about custom social feeds? Who will do it first? Is this a good start to a new social media experience?
