Gyms can provide renewable energy to combat our growing electricity needs. Imagine a gym where every weight and machine had a motor. Every rep could produce a small amount of power and store it to a battery. Set after set and day after day people will be moving heavy weights to power a battery. Make this large enough and it could offset the cost of the gym (free gym = more people). Even larger and lifters can gain points and rewards for the power they have generated. This system is gamified, promotes health, and generates clean electricity in a world where the demand for which continues to rise.
Cable machines are motorized. Tracks utilize piezo electrics. Free weights are on force plates. The integration options are endless.
While I love this idea, the power outputs we’d expect are unlikely to be meaningful at small scale. With a strong push or adoption across many gyms, this could be fantastic! Sadly, like many things, the idea is better in concept than in practice as motivation to participate in a program like this would be too low unless mandated. Gyms and renewable energy could offset new power draws even with one successful location.
