6 bullets there, but many years baked in. Yes, I think AI will be able to assist in identifying root problems and suggesting remedies, but that is not what I want to talk about. Look at the two bullets after that. Those are the ones that impact actual people. Soon we will be able to eliminate unexpected side effects and the need for risky clinical trials.
Human Models Protect Humans
Imagine not needing to test new drugs on animals or people and just knowing what it will do. That is where we are going. Nearly every major health/research organization is pushing to a new frontier. Human models are the next space race.
What is a Human Model
Imagine on your computer, there is a model of a human. Not just their skeleton, nor muscles, nor fat. I mean a full model including all of the arteries, organs, and internal structures. Still cool, but not revolutionary yet. What is next, is a fully operational chemical model.
If we can track how the system operates at the chemical level within a defined model, our entire medical system flips on its head. If we can see ‘eating X kind of food in Y volume leads to Z’ and we can see exactly how that food is digested, where it goes, how the energy is used, how much is stored, etc. We have entered an unprecedented era.
We would be able to inject these models with certain chemical mixtures and see exactly what they do to bodies without needing true clinical studies. What’s more, want to see if a medication will work for you or cause side effects? A model specific to your body can be utilized. Have an implant or damaged muscle? Well now we can see if the increased blood flow from this medication that normally is fine for people will rupture the healing muscle or inflame an implant site.
We can see exactly what is wrong with you and simulate thousands of remedies to find the one with the fewest side effect immediately and without needing to test it over the course of weeks or months.
Where is this technology at today?
Today we are in the early days of being able to do exactly what I mentioned above based on what we know about your DNA. Does the way you’re made make you a better candidate for pain medication A or B? They can tell you. What it cannot do and will never be able to, is explain non-DNA related physiological changes like injuries, surgeries, or implants.
Once we have this technology, the limit to cures is simply what we are willing to test on the model. Biomedical research will skyrocket before falling and eventually becoming broad public knowledge. After that… all that is left is to implant our brains into machines that can sustain us forever. Baby steps…
